President of Rwanda Announces Forest Preservation Collaboration with Earthpark and Great Ape Trust »

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead

Focused on the compelling need for environmental education and awareness, Earthpark’s™ programs and exhibits will emphasize natural science, sustainability, renewable energy and green technologies. Learning tools will include a 4-acre indoor rainforest biome with a 575,000 gallon integrated forest-floor aquarium, learning center and research facilities. Green design and building technologies will be utilized throughout Earthpark™ and featured as educational opportunities. Through ‘back-of-the-house’ tours, visitors can see these technologies in action and learn how they work. Other tools will include galleries on global hotspots, climate change and other environmental concerns, local ecosystems, art and cultural exhibits. Earthpark™ is expected to open in 2011.

The biome will be located on the north shore of Lake Red Rock in Pella, Iowa, as part of a masterplanned ‘live, work, and play’ green development.

This extraordinary facility, modeled after the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, will be an immersive environmental learning center for people of all ages and backgrounds. It will incorporate advanced teaching methods, awe-inspiring technology and…

An Unforgettable Experience with Nature
  • Immersion in three distinct Amazonian tropical rain forest ecosystems, housed within a high-performance, energy-efficient biome. Forest floor trails and canopy walkways will allow exploration offering perspectives otherwise difficult to envision
  • An integrated, multi-level freshwater aquarium illustrating the flow of water from the soaring Andes to the rich Atlantic. The rise and fall of the river in the rainforest can be observed, revealing the role of the river in sustaining the amazing biodiversity of the riparian forest floor
  • State-of-the-art science-based learning center for Pre-K through college students and educators brings science to life outside of the classroom
  • The most advanced “virtual reality” multimedia experience available will bring global hotspots to life and bring relevance to the interconnected nature of all life
  • Outdoor exhibits will provide opportunities for visitors to reconnect with Iowa’s natural beauty - it’s rivers, wetlands, native tall grass prairie and woodlands

Activities at Earthpark™ won’t stop with the ecological core and galleries. Art and cultural attributes will be incorporated throughout the facility. Visitors can choose to participate in learning tours; or they can simply relax indoors in the natural beauty of the rainforest or outdoors among the art and gardens surrounding the facility. There will truly be something amazing, something inspiring, for everyone at Earthpark™.
